Gender & Leadership

Gender plays a significant role in defining leadership roles and determining the quality of services in organisations. Gender refers to the social traits of men and women that range from norms and relationships to roles. Studies reveal that people’s perceptions of gender vary from one society to another and are subject to change over time. Society instills behaviour and norms, such as relationships between people of opposite sexes or workmates, to people. The gender structures, relations, and social roles influence people’s activities and approaches to handling challenges as well as leadership responsibilities. Essentially, leadership decisions and gender have a significant connection that should be evaluated to facilitate smooth operations in organization. Leadership refers to practical skills incorporating the ability of an individual to guide others towards attaining a common objective.

In an exclusive interview tagged “Gender & Leadership” with Adewale Adenrele of Dotolive News Magazine, Dr. Antoinette Carole Grace Mbarga speaks about the campaign and raising awareness for the homeless, her humanitarian efforts with deep commitment, global advocacy for women’s self-sufficiency, women’s empowerment, and gender equality.

Below are excerpts:

Some days ago, you call on representatives to create a brighter future for all with an awareness campaign for the homeless, do you think demand should be done during election year or peaceful protest for the request, what is your take on this?

Absolutely, raising awareness for the homeless is a noble and urgent cause. In the heart of our communities, the plight of the homeless often goes unnoticed, yet their stories are woven into the very fabric of our society. As we stand at the crossroads of change, we have a unique opportunity to amplify their voices and advocate for meaningful solutions. There is no size fit all approach when advocating for our homeless brothers and sisters.

During an Election Year: Imagine the power of our collective voice during an election year. Politicians are listening, eager to connect with the electorates. This is our moment to shine a spotlight on homelessness, to demand policies that provide shelter, support, and dignity for all. By engaging with candidates, attending town halls, and leveraging social media, we can ensure that homelessness becomes a key issue on the political agenda. Our message is clear: every person deserves a place to call home. Peaceful protests are a testament to our commitment and solidarity. They are a visual and powerful reminder that we will not rest until every individual has a safe place to sleep. Through marches, vigils, and community gatherings, we can draw attention to the urgent need for action. Our peaceful presence speaks volumes, showing the world that we stand united in our quest for justice and compassion.

By combining the strategic timing of an election year with the heartfelt impact of peaceful protests, we create a powerful synergy. We harness political momentum while maintaining a constant, visible presence in our communities. Together, we can inspire change, influence policy, and build a future where homelessness is not just addressed, but eradicated. Our efforts today will pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow. Every step we take, every voice we raise, brings us closer to a world where everyone has a place to call home.

You have worked in various international organizations; tell us your experiences, what have been the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of leadership for you?

Working in various international organizations has been both a challenging and rewarding journey. The most challenging aspect has been navigating the complexities of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and being labeled a feminist. It’s never easy to be a high achieving woman leading initiatives that address critical issues like human rights, education, and community development requires a deep understanding of these differences and the ability to foster collaboration among diverse groups. However, the most rewarding aspect has been witnessing the tangible impact of our efforts. Seeing individuals and communities empowered, policies changed, and lives improved is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of perseverance and empathy in leadership.

As a Human Rights Advocate, I understand the challenges we face when addressing gender roles in African households. Our mothers and grandmothers made immense sacrifices for the sake of family, often putting their own dreams and aspirations aside. Their strength and resilience laid the foundation upon which we stand today. However, we live in different times with new sets of expectations. Young women like myself are navigating a world that is rapidly changing, where opportunities and challenges are constantly evolving. It is crucial to recognize and respect the legacy of our foremothers while also embracing the progress and possibilities of the present. One of the most important skills we can cultivate is cross-cultural understanding. This means appreciating the diverse perspectives and experiences that shape our communities. It means listening with empathy, communicating with respect, and finding common ground even in the face of differences.

To the young women of today, I say this: You are powerful. You have the right to pursue your dreams, to speak your truth, and to live your life with dignity and purpose. Do not let outdated gender roles define you. Instead, let your actions and achievements redefine what is possible. To the men in our communities, I urge you to be allies in this journey. Support the women in your lives, recognize their contributions, and challenge the stereotypes that hold us all back. Together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Let us honor the sacrifices of our ancestors by building a future where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive. Let us embrace the strength that comes from unity and the progress that comes from understanding. Together, we can break down barriers, challenge norms, and create a world where everyone can succeed.

You are the CEO/founder of Afiri Consulting International and The Mbarga Project, what motivated or inspired this great concept?

The inspiration behind Afiri Consulting International and the Mbarga Project stems from a deep commitment to uplifting immigrant communities and empowering women through entrepreneurship. Hence, both initiatives are driven by a passion for social justice and a belief in the power of education and economic empowerment to create lasting change. By addressing the unique needs of immigrant communities and supporting women entrepreneurs, we strive to build a more inclusive and equitable society.

Having worked with individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, especially Latino and African immigrants, I witnessed firsthand the challenges they face in adapting to new environments and achieving economic stability. This motivated me to create Afiri Consulting International, a platform dedicated to providing professional guidance and actionable solutions to help these communities thrive.

The Mbarga Project was born out of a desire to empower women by fostering entrepreneurship. I believe that when women are given the tools and opportunities to succeed in business, they can transform their lives and their communities. Through mentorship, training programs, and support networks, we aim to inspire and equip young women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. In our journey to create a more just and compassionate world, we must never forget the most marginalized among us—the widows, the orphans, and the disabled. These individuals often face immense challenges, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their well-being extends beyond occasional donations. Our humanitarian efforts are driven by a deep commitment to providing sustained support and empowerment. We believe that every widow deserves the chance to rebuild her life with dignity, every orphan deserves the love and opportunities to thrive, and every person with disabilities deserves to live without barriers. By offering comprehensive programs that include education, vocational training, healthcare, and emotional support, we aim to uplift these communities. We strive to create an environment where they can achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. Our work is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact of sustained, meaningful support. Together, we can build a future where no one is left behind, where every individual is valued, and where the most vulnerable among us are given the chance to shine.

You advocate for the homeless, the disabled and call for promoting humanity, service, peace and unity, who influenced you and why do you choose this path?

My journey to serve the most vulnerable in our community is a calling deeply rooted in the incredible resilience and determination of my family. My little brother Morel, who endured four brain surgeries and months in a coma, taught me the power of hope and perseverance. My mother, an orphan raised by her grandmother in Cameroon, showed me the strength that comes from overcoming adversity without formal education. My father, despite his speech impediment, achieved a master’s degree in finance, demonstrating that no obstacle is too great to overcome. My grandparents, who were farmers with no formal education, instilled in me the values of hard work and dedication. Growing up in Cameroon and migrating to the USA at a young age, I witnessed the struggles of marginalized communities firsthand. My parents, who were deeply committed to community service, instilled in me the values of compassion and empathy. Their dedication to helping others, despite limited resources, inspired me to pursue a path where I could make a tangible difference. Additionally, my work with various international organizations exposed me to the profound impact that dedicated advocacy can have on people’s lives. Seeing the resilience and strength of those facing adversity, especially women, children, and the disabled, reinforced my commitment to this cause.

I chose to answer the calling to this faith building yet highly demanding path because I believe in the power of collective action and the importance of giving a voice to the voiceless. Every individual deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to thrive. By advocating for the most vulnerable, I aim to create a more inclusive and compassionate world where everyone has the chance to succeed.

The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all, what are your contributions, achievements, projects and success stories so far?

My contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are driven by a commitment to uplift marginalized communities and promote gender equality. Through Afiri Consulting International and The Mbarga Project, I have spearheaded initiatives that provide education, vocational training, and economic opportunities for women and immigrants. One of our notable projects is the Miss Africa USA Internship Programme, which focuses on encouraging black girls to pursue careers in STEM fields. This initiative has empowered many young women to break barriers and achieve their dreams. Additionally, I have worked extensively with Latino and African immigrant communities, providing them with the resources and support needed to thrive in new environments. My advocacy efforts have also highlighted critical issues such as domestic violence, human trafficking, and racial discrimination, bringing these concerns to the forefront of public discourse. One of our success stories includes organising a community protest before Congress and the White House to prevent the cancellation of the Diversity Visa Lottery, which was instrumental in protecting the rights of immigrants. These efforts, combined with my role as a United Nations Global Peace Ambassador, have allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the SDGs, particularly in areas of gender equality, quality education, and reduced inequalities. Together, we can continue to make strides towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

One of my proudest achievements is receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award  Gold Medal from President Barack Obama, along with three prestigious President’s Lifetime Achievement Awards—two for myself and one for Afiri Consulting International.

Our consulting firm also earned an official citation from the Governor of Maryland for our community efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, nothing compares to the joy of seeing my father’s pride as he celebrates my accomplishments. As an African immigrant and a daddy’s girl, making my dad proud is the most fulfilling feeling in the world. His unwavering support and belief in me have been my greatest inspiration. These accolades are not just personal milestones; they are a testament to the power of dedication, resilience, and the impact we can make when we strive to uplift our communities. Together, we can continue to create positive change and inspire others to do the same.

With your leadership role and vast experience working with international organizations, what are the needs in Africa? What will it take to build entrepreneurship and employment in Africa? And what are you trying to do to move the needle?

Africa’s journey towards sustainable development hinges on addressing critical needs on my top three SDG goals: quality education, affordable healthcare, and reducing inequalities. Ensuring access to quality education for all children, especially girls, is paramount to empowering the next generation and fostering innovation. Improving healthcare infrastructure and access to essential services is crucial for enhancing overall well-being and resilience. Reducing inequalities by promoting social and economic inclusion for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, is vital for creating a just and equitable society. Through collective efforts and unwavering commitment, we can transform these challenges into opportunities, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for Africa.

Building entrepreneurship and employment in Africa requires a foundation of good governance and a strong stance against corruption. Good governance ensures that policies are transparent, inclusive, and supportive of business growth. Combating corruption is essential to creating a fair and competitive environment where entrepreneurs can thrive. I strongly believe that by fostering accountability, integrity, and equitable opportunities, we can unlock Africa’s immense potential and drive sustainable economic development. I move the needle by helping our communities create a future where innovation and entrepreneurship flourish, leading to widespread employment and prosperity. Spreading messages of hope and peace also helps us stay focused on our common goals for a more prosperous Africa.

In the past 20 years, sub-Saharan Africa has achieved some of the most dramatic breakthroughs in the world. The number of female legislators on the continent has increased, would you consider yourself as a politician someday?

Sub-Saharan Africa’s progress, especially the rise in female legislators, is truly inspiring. While I am deeply committed to advocacy and community service, I believe that leadership comes in many forms. Whether through politics or other avenues, my goal is to continue empowering and uplifting those around me. A funny story is that back in 2015, I ran for city council to immerse myself in the political process here in the US. This experience was a powerful journey of learning and growth. It reinforced my belief that understanding the system is crucial to driving change.

If the path of politics allows me to further amplify the voices of the marginalized and drive meaningful change, I would embrace it wholeheartedly. Whether or not I hold a political office, my commitment to serving and empowering my community remains unwavering. Every step we take towards understanding and engagement brings us closer to a brighter future for all. Ultimately, my mission is to serve and make a positive impact, wherever that journey may lead.
